Ring-only budgie and finch club comes to Cumbria

740-1-D-NormanFIVE FANCIERS HAVE set up a new club for budgerigar and foreign-finch breeders and exhibitors in northwest England, called Eden Valley Bird Club Cumbria.

Run by John Hunter, Ian Littleton, Colin and Helen McAleese and Shaun McCormick, the new club aims to hold its first open show and sale in Carlisle on September 17 this year.

Co-founder and club secretary Helen McAleese said: “We want to put on a friendly and informal show that welcomes beginners and offers help and advice to newcomers to the fancy. There will also be a sale and auction of birds that have been donated.”

The club hopes to attract new members from the local area and would like the standard of birds benched at its show to be high. All birds entered into the open show must be ringed with either a Budgerigar Society or foreign finch club ring. Unringed birds will not be accepted.

Eden Valley has already obtained sponsorship from McVities Biscuit and Haith’s Seed suppliers, as well as local companies WCF Pet & Equestrian in Carlisle, Blendbetter Foods at Longtown, and Arcade Pet Stores in Penrith, which will also be in attendance on the sale days. Further sponsorship has come from Pioneer Foods in Carlisle.

Mrs McAleese added: “We are excited about the club’s first show. We’ve got some great sponsors and are hoping for a good number of entries. We hope to make these shows a regular occurrence and are also in the process of designing a club logo.”

Eden Valley Bird Club Cumbria’s first open show and sale will be held on September 17 at Warwick-on- Eden Memorial Hall, near Carlisle CA4 8PF. Show entries will be taken over the phone on September 11 between 6pm and 9pm. Entry forms will be available from August 11. Look out for more details in Club News in a future issue.
