Welsh society returns after two years with a new junior outlook

20170617 143128ABERYSTWYTH AVICULTURAL SOCIETY is back with a stronger team at the helm following an 18-month break.

The society formed in 2012 by four fanciers: Stewart Kinninmonth, Mark Hemingway, Stuart Roberts and Keith Morgan. However, after two successful annual shows in 2013 and 2014 the club came to a halt due to unforeseen circumstances.

Earlier this year, the original members, along with Terry Hicks and his wife Pauline decided to resurrect the club to strengthen the birdkeeping hobby in West Wales, and sets to benefit juniors and the local community.

At the inaugural meeting on June 18, a number of fanciers offered their support and sponsorship was put forward.

Mr Kinninmonth told Cage & Aviary Birds: “We are lucky to have on board Jon Morrow of Fun Hire Wales, Barry and Norma Lloyd of Bird Pro and Brian Moule, who are future members and sponsors to help move our club forward.

“With their knowledge, they can assist our members who keep a wide range of species. Barry Lloyd’s supplement advice is invaluable; Jon Morrow’s fundraising background will benefit our events and Brian Moule is a helpful seed supplier.”

Others to have backed the club’s resurrection are original treasurer Eluned Evans and Rhian Williams of the RAW 1 Budgerigar partnership.

Mr Kinninmonth continued: “Starting up again, we feel we need to promote the hobby to a wider field. We have many successful junior members and so we’re keen to target local schools to give talks about the fancy. This club’s presence will also give birdkeepers in the area a chance to seek help and advice when needed.”

Fundraising ideas have been discussed, along with potential open show dates, aviary visits and a proposed logo. Details of which, along with a full committee, will be confirmed at the AGM to be held on July 5, 7pm, at the Black Lion pub, Llanbadarn Aberystwyth SY23 3RA.

Mr Kinninmonth added: “All are welcome to pop along and join the meeting to get the club rolling on to greater things.”
