Top Fife men donate towards fundraiser for show staging

The-deputy-Lord-Mayor-of-Lurgan-presenting-the-BIS-trophy-to-Laura-Lynch-for-our-winner-Wil-ODonovanA ONE-OFF AUCTION of birds has helped a Fife canary club towards its urgent fundraising target for new staging.

On December 9, Mid Ulster Fife Fancy Canary Club held a bird auction alongside its annual open show at the Methodist Church Hall in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. Eight top exhibition Fifes were donated by eight key supporters of the club: Gerald Spencer from Barnsley; Garry & Jonny Archer from Newcastle; Lurgan’s Charlie Gardiner and Alan Castles; judge on the day Steve Cooke from England; Dublin’s Kieran Connolly and Wil O’Donovan from Cork.

Officials had anticipated the auction would make £200 but were overwhelmed with a final total of £360.

Mr Spencer’s donated variegated blue cock welcomed high interest in the bidding auction, reaching a top sale on the day of £95. Other birds auctioned included two heavily variegated buff cocks; a lightly variegated buff cock and hen; a self green cock; clear buff cock and a clear yellow cock.

The club’s publicity officer Emmett McAteer told Cage & Aviary Birds: “This money will go a long way towards paying for new staging that the club desperately needs. Without a doubt, these birds came from some of the top Fife men in the UK and Ireland, and this is why we had such a good response to their birds on the day.”

The cost of the new staging, and the club’s target, is £1,000. Mr McAteer added: “Members have previously actively tried to raise funds, and a recent raffle brought in another £300. Another raffle on show day made an additional £100.”

Officials have other fundraising events, such as a coffee morning, in the pipeline, and expect to raise the final funds over the next few months.
