Surprise prize puts the cap on a suberb day at Stafford

The print Gang Gangs Galore, which was awarded to the best breeders’ table display was presented to Brian Liddington (left) and his grandson Ryan Officials at the Staffordshire Spring Bird Show have thanked avian artist John Birch for stepping in at the last minute and donating a print as a prize to mark the show's 20th anniversary.

Show organiser Shaun Smith said the print was a nice extra to the show, held on March 4. The print, titled Gang Gangs Galore, was donated to the best breeders ' table display, and was presented by Mr Birch's wife Chris to winner Brian Liddington and his grandson Ryan Johnson.

Mr Smith said: "At the start of the show stewards went round to check all of the breeders' tables to make sure birds' cages were clean and presentable. Nine tables stood out as possible winners, but Mr Liddington's table looked really nice with conifers as decorations." He went on to say: "The decorated table certainly worked for Mr Liddington because he sold 20 pairs of rosellas."

More than 4,000 people attended the annual show, which had 741 breeders' tables, 35 clubs present, and 52 trade stands.

Mr Smith said that the only disappointing thing was the bad weather, but that it hadn't spoiled the show. He explained: "At the end of the day I checked on the outside traders and even though it had rained, most had sold all of their stock and their vans were empty."

Plans for the 2013 show are underway, and Mr Smith said a prize for second and third place best breeders' table display will be awarded. He added: "The show has progressed since its very first year. We only had the main hall with about 200 tables.

"Birds were kept in cardboard boxes with wire mesh. Now the birds are in purpose- built, painted cages with decorations inside. It really shows the hobby off in a good light."
